  • Jason Howard demonstrates how hard work, ambition, and trusting in the Lord can yield some awesome results.   Even as a young man, Howard has lived by the adage, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16) and continues to today.  Ever since college, Howard’s vision has been to use private equity to support Christian ministries, especially to help inner-city youth, and he makes all his decisions in light of this goal.
Howard notes that it took many years of hard work to now be working for Credit Suisse, a prominent multi-national bank and one of Fortune Magazine’s most admired companies.  While still in college, he made a point of being the best intern he could be at Goldman-Sachs.  He worked very hard in his early career, and now he is freed up to do things like make big decisions on behalf of the Salvation Army. Over the years, Howard has learned to trust God with the small things, so that when the big decisions came, he felt confident that God would take care of him.  His daily prayer at work was, “Lord, I’m following your Spirit!”  This prayer was scary many times when things seemed uncertain, but Howard shared how he’s seen God’s hand at work in guiding him throughout his career.
Howard encouraged all of us to trust in God first, and as we do so the Lord will lead us.  Living in this manner will definitely make our lives stand out in order to bring God glory!
Other tips from Jason Howard:
·         Talk to successful people: ask, “What did they do that worked?” and follow their example
·         Demonstrate passion and determination in order to differentiate yourself from other people’s mediocrity
·         Trust in God in the workplace, because inevitably people will notice that you stand out and ask you why

  • Why Getting Your ZZZs is a Smart Idea

“Entrepreneurs often claim to need minimal sleep. Yet the vast majority of people actually require six to seven hours,” states Michael Chee, director of the Centre for Cognitive Neuroscience at Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School in Singapore.  There is plenty of evidence that makes sleeping well seem like a good idea:

    ·         sleep-deprived people are slower and less accurate when concentrating than well-rested people

    ·         Lack of sleep affects your ability to control your emotions.

    ·         On the other hand, prolonged sleep can boost performance. In a study by the Stanford Sleep Disorders Clinic and Research Laboratory, when college basketball players slept for at least 10 hours a night, their shooting accuracy improved 9 percent.

Take it from the experts: sleep is better for you and for your grades.

  • Ebay

Ebay has taken strides in revolutionizing online retail. Having started close to 20 years ago, they have successfully kept on top of innovative ideas in order to maintain an extremely positive reputation. More recently, they have introduced a new idea called eBay now. The idea has only been launched in New York City, San Jose and San Francisco, but it offers a way for consumers in those places to receive same day delivery for products ordered from work, home, restaurants etc…With a $5 delivery charge, purchasers have products delivered to them, wherever they are, in about an hour via valet driver. Assuming this takes off successfully, it will add yet another element that could change the face of online retailing as we know it.

  • Informational Interviews

SBA holds many workshops to prepare students for resume writing and interviewing but one area that is commonly overlooked is the informational interview.  An informational interview is a meeting with a professional to find out more information about the company and their specific role within the firm.  It can be used to get information on the company, a career path, a specific job, or just to get your foot in the door to a potential employer.  However, remember that the purpose is to get information, not a job.  There are a number of ways to have a successful informational interview.

Click the following link to download more information on how an informational interviews conducted: http://www.apu.edu/live_data/files/157/informational_interviewing_booklet.pdf.

  • Example of a Tough Job Interview Question

You are driving along in your car on a wild, stormy night. You pass by a bus stop, and you see three people waiting for the bus:

    1. An old lady who looks as if she is about to die.
    2. An old friend who once saved your life.
    3. The perfect man (or) woman you have been dreaming about.

Which one would you choose to offer a ride to, knowing that there could only be one passenger in your car?

Think before you continue reading. This is a moral/ethical dilemma that was once actually used as part of a job application.

You could pick up the old lady, because she is going to die, and thus you should save her first; or you could take the old friend because he once saved your life, and this would be the perfect chance to pay him back. However, you may never be able to find your perfect dream lover again.

The candidate who was hired (out of 200 applicants) had no trouble coming up with his answer.
He simply answered: “I would give the car keys to my old friend, and let him take the lady to the hospital. I would stay behind and wait for the bus with the woman of my dreams.”
Never forget to “Think Outside of the Box.”

  • Tour of Woodbridge Wines

A few of our members took a business tour of a winery recently.  Here is an overview of what they learned:

“This past President’s Day weekend, we ended up on a tour of a winery that produces and distributes the nationally known Woodbridge wines by Robert Mondavi, in Lodi, California. This included a debriefing of the company’s history over the past century, a look at their local resources as well as getting an up close and personal look and the industrial side of the organization. The history included the struggles that the winemakers faced in establishing their brand, especially with the Prohibition Laws in the 1920s. This history eventually led to their well-established center in Lodi that can now produce 400 cases of wine per minute.

Jillian, the one guiding us through the large industrial regions, was thrilled to share more information about the systems used in their wine making than we could even take in. What was very notable was that this winery took risks in being the first to use certain methods such as a specialized “Direct-to-press” process used for white wines where grapes are pressed as clusters rather than having them ‘de-stemmed’ for various practical reasons. Also, Mondavi was much quicker to bring in stainless steel machinery for the pressing process, allowing for a more efficient and thorough cleaning process.

What was most impressive about this look at the organization was going into their barrel cellar. Woodbridge holds the title for having the single largest barrel cellar under one roof in the world. It can hold up to 90,000 massive barrels, and we were told it was holding 70,000 the day we received the privilege to go inside. This cellar was surreal to see with barrels situated up to the ceiling in every direction you looked. We spoke with Jillian about the process of ordering specific barrels from different areas and the different oaks used, depending on what type of taste they were aiming for, with individual barrels costing the company up to $1,000. Upon entering this cellar, one could tell that, as every company must have some sort of motivational core, this was the core and epicenter of Woodbridge Winery. They take great pride in the massive cellar where their wines sit and establish their signature tastes. To be able to see this element of a company was an invigorating way to look at the world of business and the possibilities it holds.”
